The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division is responsible for
training and maintaining the certification of the EMTs
(Emergency Medical Technicians) and Paramedics for the Scott
Twp. Fire Department. The EMS Division is also responsible for
the upkeep of both of the ALS ambulance staffed by the Scott
Twp. Fire Department.
STFD EMS division has approximately 15 EMTs and 15
Paramedics. We operate as an Advanced Life Support Transport
service at the Paramedic care level.
Approximately 80% of the emergency responses that STFD responds
to are medical in nature. To fulfill the need for quality EMS
response a large majority of our firefighters are cross-trained
in the emergency medical field.
EMT certification requires 160 hours in class lecture, and 24
hours of practical training in a clinical setting. Each year
STFD sends approximately 5 firefighters through the six-month
program. However,
Paramedic training is 24 months in duration, this training is
provided by a couple of qualified institutions in the Tri-State
area.
The EMS division annually recertifies its EMTs. This process
requires many hours of continuing education. Training for the
EMTs takes place on a monthly basis with 3-6 trainings per
month, and skills days scheduled during the year.
The Scott Twp. Fire Department has two ALS transport ambulances
with rescue equipment for emergency runs and motor vehicle
crashes. In addition we have 7 BLS non-transport vehicles to
assist in an emergency situation.
These pieces of
equipment, along with the associated personnel, respond to
medical emergencies like heart attacks, difficulty breathing,
diabetic emergencies, trauma, and others. The STFD EMS division
tries to assure the best patient care available to the citizens
and guests of Scott Township. |
